Thoughts on Some RPGs I Want to Play
Each falls into one (or more) of the following categories: space, revolution, gay, monsters.
Correction: In the previous issue of the Twice-Weekly Daily Nightly Buzz, “name” on line 1 (of 1) is a misspelling of “nap.” The Twice-Weekly Daily Nightly Buzz regrets this error.
I was going to do a normal person issue because Tom didn’t like my previous email and “thought I could use an editor.” Well consider this Tom: I HAVE AN EDITOR!!!!! And a really good one who I respect, too. (just… you know for my student governance column. not this silly thing.) Plus, part of the charm of the Twice-Weekly Daily Nightly Buzz is that it’s unedited—just like the poorly written email sent out to all 60k students at ubc.
Anyways, screw you and your little cancelgar plane, “Not a happy bunny” Tom. (With love. I hope your next flight is better.) We’re doing nerd shit today!
Some TTRPGs I want to play
Some of y’all might recall that in a previous issue, I wrote down some Thoughts on Every RPG I've Played. Well, today, I’m going to write about some TTRPGs I haven’t played yet, but I want to in the near future. I’m currently running a Pathfinder 2e campaign that is… hopefully less than 10 session from concluding so. Theoretically my schedule should open up!
All of the games I’m talking about a pretty narrative and character focused — no tactical combat here. We’ve just been playing fighting so many monsters in our games that I want a break. Feed the theatre kid inside me!
Spire: The City Must Fall
Spire is a game about revolution and oppression. You play as revolutionary drow who fight against the aelfir — the elves that rule over Spire. You work for an organization that would sell you out if it would move them an inch forward. You are going to hurt people — and your work is going to kill you.
I dunno, it just seems so fun, hurtling towards your death while shattering all your morals to move your society one step closer — progress that will inevitably be taken back by the aelfir. I dunno, I think it’d be really fun.
Plus, it’s way more narrative than any of the games I’m playing now. That’s something you’ll notice about all of the games on this list — they’re fiction-first. None of them are tactical fighting monsters games.
The fallout system is so cool. You just get a ton of ways for your character to get fucked over the campaign — eventually becoming to severe that they are basically out of the story.

The special abilities in this game are so cool too. Like one of the characters can literally appear anywhere???

I dunno, this game feels very Andor and I think it would be incredibly fun.
Monsterhearts 2
This is such a fascinating one. Because I haven’t read/watched any of the media it’s clearly inspired by, but I want to play it so badly. In Monsterhearts 2, you play high schoolers who are also monsters in various ways (werewolves, vampires, ghouls, archfae, etc). And it seems so fun to do a game of :D
But also, it’s a game that’s about sexuality and relationships (especially toxic ones), so it’s definitely not a super light game that I’d be comfortable playing with a random group at a convention, you know? Like it definitely seems like a flirt with each other game and I don’t know how many people would feel comfy playing a game where the literal first listing on the player quick reference sheet is this:

“I give myself to you” is CRAZY
And when literally every character has a sex move that happens when sex:

But it seems so fun and messy and getting into that like… interpersonal drama and playing characters who are trying to figure themselves out and like aaaarrrrggghhhh. They published a list of small towns you could set your game in, and there’s one that’s in Northern BC that might be fun because of geographic proximity, but also super white small town in America that’s a little bit filled with Nazis seems like it may be the exact vibes right now. I think it might be cathartic.
I dunno, it seems like it could be really fun and rewarding to play. (I’m also so scared to GM for this game — but it’d be a great way to stretch my GMing muscles.)
Anyways if anyone is interested (provided I’ve had a conversation with you outside of the Michael Kingsmill Forum and you don’t hold an elected position in student government), let me know :). Honestly this goes for all of these games.
Bump in the Dark
I’m excited for a mini campaign of Bump in the Dark, too. It’s a monster-of-the-week style supernatural investigation game that… I just want to play it so bad. Just the vibe of being a bunch of outcasts protecting your community the only way you can is just amazing. The investigation mechanics with collecting clues and leading into a showdown is so satisfying (the players make a guess as to what the baddie is then make a roll based on the number of clues they’ve discovered to see how right they are).
And there’s this whole system where to calm down after a hunt you can seek solace — something like Love, Faith, or Camaraderie. I dunno it’s just so sweet and positive. I’d really love to run this one too.
(I did also mention wanting to play Bump in the Dark like 8 months ago when I was a guest on… potentially the biggest podcast in the Draw Steel community: Goblin Points.)
Scum and Villany
WHO DOESNT WANT TO PLAY THE SCI-FI SPACE PIRATES GAME. Truly there is little else for me to say. Sci-fi is such a fun genre. And space pirates are so stupidly incredibly cool. You get a ship!!!! That you can upgrade!!!!!
Did I mention you get a fancy spaceship????? WHO DOESNT LOVE A SPACESHIP!!!!!! And you’re doing crimes!!! IN SPACE!!!! SPACE CRIMES!!!!!!! IN YOUR SPACESHIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mothership
It’s a space horror game. Like Alien (presumably — I haven’t watched it). I just feel like it’s a really different vibe from many of the games I’ve played before and it would also be incredibly fun. Struggling to survive as a monster of some kind prowls around your space ship.
Quinns’ Quest has an episode on Mothership that speaks very highly of it. I think it’d be incredibly fun.
There’s also Arkyvr, a zine expansion that makes it so you’re not just surviving the spaceship monster — you’re a film crew responsible for documenting it. I just feels so hilarious and surreal to be trying to get quality audio of a monster as it chases after your colleague. An absolute blast.
Lesbian MS Paint Games
This is like a whole genre over on itch.io and they’re low key incredible? They’re just like cozy little games about queerness and identity and gender and capitalism. I dunno they’re just really cute and I’d love to play one at some point. It seems fun. Look at these character archetypes you could play as!!!!

tag yourself I think “the girlfriend of my girlfriend” is most accurate to me
Thirsty Sword Lesbians
Need I say more? I think the name pretty much sells it. Lesbians + Swords. What’s else could you want?
I do love how Powered by the Apocalypse games (which this is) deal with conditions. Like if you gain the Guilty condition, you have difficulty providing emotional support until you “sacrifice something important just to hurt yourself for what you’ve done.” Just so juicy and characterful I love it.
Honestly I’m not convinced I’d love the system? Like… the Tumblr aesthetic (not in a derogatory way) is cute and fun. But I do wonder like… does pandering to the sapphics (me) make for a less cohesive narrative experience? Or is it just a game where… whatever “plot” is happening is just in the background. The main focus is lesbian flirting and everything else is secondary. Because an Oops All Sapphics game would be a fun vibe.
Also, flirting advice (they forgot to include “agree to attend a student governance meeting simply because a girl you like was going”):

“Offer to show them your favourite hot spring” is some Melinoë shit — if any of you nerds know Hades II
Other News
I made a thing :)
You might remember a while back I wrote a basically unreadable, very nerdy newsletter. What? Oh. That’s all of them? Okay, fine. This is the one I was referencing: Let's Design Some Troubadour Retainers.
Anyways, those retainers were for a full collection, which I finally got around to editing , laying out, and making a cover for (it’s not that good of a cover, but it’s free so there wasn’t really an art budget).
Truly almost none of you care about this. But sometimes, this newsletter is just for me :D. And I’m proud of the design in here. I think it’s really cool and flavourful. I would think this, but I think the stuff my boyfriend and I publish for Draw Steel is among the highest quality third party stuff.
Therapy But Podcast
Trauma Dump with Lou Wilson is so funny and so painful. It’s a therapy session podcast and Lou’s character is just… so defensive when the therapizing happens. It’s also so incredibly painful. Just… so much time is spent in pained, awkward silence. It’s incredible. Also there’s a neon ptsDTF sign.
Puppets but Anxiety
Honestly impeccable vibes from Ashly Burch on this one. Children’s show but for adults about adult mental health is really great. I feel like this is the absolute vibe of art I need lmao.
There’s a puppet song about tips for when you’re having an anxiety attack. Which… I should think about more (I cried very hard the other day about a piece of paper I left at home).
From the Archive
Damn. Four year pay freeze for faculty. And the minister of post-secondary education literally said “You never get everything you want in life anyway.” That’s so incredibly callous. Bestie needs better media training if he’s giving out quotes like that. (August 12, 1986)

Also, from one of the ads: Printers in the Nest?????????

That’s All!
Look I wrote an actual newsletter this time, aren’t you proud of me, ma? There’s honestly a lot of gay content in this one. So you’re welcome. Happy pride :).
We’ve been having a fun time. Wrapping up term 1 of summer. I’m totally going be taking an L in my computer networking course. But that’s okay. It builds character, losing your life-long straight As. (Plus, it’ll be during pride month! When better not to be straight?) [Editor’s Note: After I finished writing the newsletter, I accidentally looked at my most recent quiz grade (normally I ignore them for weeks to prove they can’t hurt me), and it was a 98! So maybe I won’t be building character this term?]
I played some Hades II earlier this week, since there’s a new update. (The latest song by Scylla and the Sirens slaps. I’ve had the other Scylla et al. songs stuck in my head for MONTHS, so I’m glad to have a third on rotation.)
I was a suspect in Tony Kulenovic’s murder (for Tony’s birthday lmao), and for the special skills section of my suspect sheet he listed “knows too much about the UBC AMS.” Which I took great offence to until I ran into my boyfriend on the bus and exclusively talked about AMS politics. (I deserve to be killed. It would be a mercy for me and everyone I know.)
Until Wednesday at 10:03 pm, buzz on, my busy bees!
Not a joke: pretending to be Pea Man outside the Nest since 2025
