Just copy pasting an email my boyfriend sent to Sheldon

Oops I only gave myself 30 minutes to write this email, can you tell?

So… maybe I didn’t give myself a ton of time to write this email. In my defence uhhhh…. I graded like three hundred CPSC210 exams earlier today then had a Real Rough Afternoon (sometimes you need a cry about the state of the world). And I have an exam tomorrow!

But anyways, I gave some posters and a sticker to the AMS Archives (hi!) earlier today, so in honour of that, please enjoy my emergency backup Nightly Buzz content.

An email sent to the AMS Archivist two years ago

Dear Archivist Sheldon Goldfarb,

I hope this email finds you well and in good health. My name is Zach, I am a second year Neuroscience Student pursuing my undergraduate degree here at UBC. Though not affiliated in an official capacity with any constituency, advocacy, or resource group on campus, my friends and I do our best to attend all AMS student council meetings that our schedules permit.

In the few months of our attendance, my group has found your historical updates to be by far our favourite part of meetings. The brief though detailed windows into the storied past of our student union have offered much needed respite in meetings otherwise suffused with uninspiring bureaucratic procedure or charged emotional debate. I would only hope to convey how much undying gratitude and genuine thanks my friends and I feel towards your work in this capacity.

Over this past summer, confined to the medium of zoom as we were, I recall an update that instilled within my group a particular feeling of admiration we will not soon forget. The update in question featured an invigorating dive into the history of the name AMS and an explanation of why our organization that largely provides for undergraduate students is titled Alma Mater Society. Now while this update's content did not differ significantly from others, the adjoining performance has occupied our thoughts for months now. I know not how much importance you placed upon it at the time, but the poem you wrote and performed for the council and gathered guests at that meeting was as an oasis of verdant tranquility in the roiling sands of a scorched waste. For this too you have our truest thanks.

Though my words of gratitude could consume the content of many more messages, this email is not purely meant to offer thanks. I hope you will forgive me for waiting so long to reach the crux of my correspondence but it was of great import to me that I display my appreciation before presenting my request. In that same meeting when the poem was performed, you briefly mentioned the existence of an accompanying song detailing similar information. Now I would never deign to ask you to perform more than you wish but would be remiss if I did not say that following several exceptionally difficult meetings, the addition of a sung component to the next historical update may offer the council or at least my friends and I vitalizing respite and a treasured reminder of what we enjoy about these meetings.

I pray you take my suggestion under consideration, but if nothing is taken from this email but the knowledge that your work has been seen and appreciated that will be solace enough for me.

Cordially,

Zach Kanevski

[Editor’s Note: Sheldon did not sing at any subsequent AMS Council meetings]

Sam Low You Cannot Escape

I found your little drawings….

At first I was like. Surely this Bee is a Barry “Bee” Buzzword bee.

BUT THEN I SAW THIS

Everyone on campus needs to see this diagram

I see all, Sam Low.

Also How Are You Studying for 310

I really don’t know what I’m supposed to do 💀. I’ve just been reading/watching the course website material and hoping for the best.

Anyways, see you after 310 cooks us :D.

Also eat and sleep bestie. You don’t need to earn those things <3.

The AMS is Mean :(

They moved tonight’s AMS Council meeting to Saturday evening instead :(. That’s the night before I skip town! And I was thinking of going to a theatre thing that night because mostly improvised but with structure sounds like vibes.

But alas. AMS Council. The accursed. I had thought I would rid myself of your vile influence, but your grasp has only tightened on me. I fear I shall never find myself free of your clutches — circumstance and opportunity conspires to pull me ever closer to you and I have not the strength of will to resist.

From the Web

  • CPSC 310: Software Engineering Course Website. So… maybe I haven’t actually been on this website as much as I should have been.

  • Nov. 22, 1963 | CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite. Putting 60 year old news clips on while doing dishes goes kinda hard y’all. Also JFK saying he’ll wear a hat someone got him once he’s back in the White House on Monday broke my heart.

  • Carlson x Fauci (intothevloid on AO3). I truly did NOT want to share this with y’all. But I figured if I published… the previous piece of political fan fiction, the least I could do in return is put myself on blast. I’ve been waiting for a new chapter of this one for like… actually two years — and it turns out the most recent chapter came out like 3 months ago and I didn’t know. I’ve literally had this fic on my bookmarks bar for years. I simply have no idea why we started reading this fic, but it was really funny when I tried to read it while dissolving medication under my tongue :D.

From the Archive

Did you know The Ubyssey used to have a video series they published every week? Pretty funky.

I know I wouldn’t be the target audience if something like it came back, but I wonder if coming to people on more fronts would improve our university’s quality of conversation around… so much. (I sort of assume something like this is on the radar given The Ubyssey’s sneaking back onto Instagram and the couple dabbles in Reels they’ve made so far, but what do I know, I’m just a bee with a crush)

“Time is of the essence,” said VP External Kyle Warwick, 15 years before the Millennium Line expansion is scheduled to be finished… extension to UBC not included.

Also, Justin McElroy’s resting news pose looks exactly the same over a decade later

Please DONT notice me Justin. I know you could eviscerate me like you did Ian and I’m such a sensitive little guy

That’s All!

Anyways, that’s all for me. I’m going to be heading south for a couple weeks, so that’s fun and not spooky (because it isn’t Halloween season, obviously… no other reason). I’d like to continue sending these fun and funky emails out, but I may miss the exact publish time. Or be unable to publish for a variety of reasons! But hopefully we’ll stay consistent.
