I watched half of the new Moana movie on the plane
Yeah we're speed writing this one
Yeah so I’m on vacation with my family right now. Yahoo. On the plane ride here, I watched the first half of Moana 2 (instead of going through all the journalism readings I told myself I’d read). So you’re getting half-cooked thoughts on the new Moana movie. I suppose reviewing things I haven’t seen/done is a bit of a staple of this newsletter.
I’m not sure the general online sentiment — I haven’t looked and I treasure my ignorance on the matter — however, I don’t know why this movie exists. Okay, I know why it exists. Because why make something new when you can make something old again and cash in on the guaranteed nostalgia factor. But like… I dunno. I don’t think there needed to be a second Moana?
And the movie seemed like it was just trying to do Moana again. Like just general structure wise, it’s very similar. Like Moana has a song about whether or not to leave her village. Does some sailing. Encounters the coconut people (Leonardo DiCaprio meme) — they’re on her side now though. Goes deep into some unknown water land. Rescues Maui. A denizen of that underwater land does a song. Maui gets a song with a very similar style to You’re Welcome. (this is where my flight landed)
I also wasn’t really that big a fan of any of the songs. They just didn’t feel super inspired? Some of them did feel like nice continuations from the first Moana (“Beyond” comes to mind as a continuation of “How Far I’ll Go”). But even then it felt Moana-again.
There were also a bunch of side characters that… I dunno. Felt There. I don’t have strong opinions about them except that I think at the point I am, they don’t feel super necessary?
I’m not a Disney girlie, so it’s not like I’m eagerly awaiting every Disney movie or TV show. Moana 2 felt like it would be an absolute banger for children, especially those who loved moana and have all the action figures and can’t wait to get their parents to buy all the toys from Moana 2. But so far it isn’t hitting for me. Maybe I’ll finish it on my flight back. Or maybe I’ll pretend to be an intellectual and actually read about Telling True Stories or Arguing Differently.
Other News
Speaking of journalism reading…
I’ve got a new column out!!!! Hype. I definitely didn’t blow past my deadline by a week and then pull an all nighter to get it done and in doing produce at least one completely nonsensical paragraph :p. That would be crazy. But it’s okay. Some have said this is the single most important piece of writing in the history of the AMS. (You wouldn’t know the person who said that. She goes to school in another state.)
Anyways, you should read it! I think it’ll be out by the time this newsletter is out.
Also y’all I was next to my mom when I got the notification on my RSS Reader that the article dropped and I showed her and that’s how she found out I use they/she pronouns. Which is absolutely hilarious. Because I did hard launch they/she pronouns in the first piece I wrote for the Ubyssey. So you know. It is what it is. Little bit of an awkward interaction (she’s never understood my gender lmao), but all is good :D.
She also said “oh wow this is long” which YEAH. I WROTE IT. I KNOW. I’m so painfully aware.
Speaking of Point of Inquiry…
I got the single most amazing item possible in the Monday Draw Steel game I play in:

It’s the Key of Inquiry!!!!!!! I’ve nicknamed it “Point”, so it can be my Point of Inquiry. I was the happiest bunny in the world when we got this. Gonna get up to so many schenanigans.
And it’s Point of Inquiry!!!! Like my column!!! Isn’t that so fun???? You have to say yes or I’ll make you answer three embarrassing questions in full :)
I need helllpppp
Can someone describe what I should search for to find these icons. I’m pretty sure they’re publicly available and not custom (I found most of the icons from what these are from on Flaticon)

Please don’t say AI logo or butthole. I already tried. Also fun fact, there are icons of a those tail butt plugs. The more you know. (Hi my partner’s mom.)
I could just rip them from the font file, but that feels a little bit not cool on the copyright front.

Paging Riley Huntley — it’s a skydiving Ubyssey
I think we should dump 15,000 copies of The Ubyssey onto campus from a low-flying plane. I think it would be hilarious. We could do a bake sale to fund it!
That’s All!
Yahoo. A short one. Sunday’s might be too. Spending time with my family and what not. As well as entirely drafting the final essay for my Shakespeare course (I haven’t started and it’s due like 9 hours after I get back to Vancouver). Also preparing for a very fun TTRPG mini campaign once I get back. It’s a good time.
Also I realized I super want an outro on my segment of The Vilest Rag and we’ve already recorded the first four 😭. It’s okay — I’ll get one starting in episode 5. Unless I’m not allowed one. Which would be fine, I guess.
Some might say this was a really poorly and hastily written email. To which I’d say:
Anyways GO READ MY COLUMN
Until Sunday at 10:03 pm, buzz on, my busy bees!
