A Story of Three Crashouts

Over the span of 24 hours, I had three serious crash outs. All of them about very important things. Luckily, I care enough about my dignity to keep my crash outs off reddit. Unluckily, I am more than willing to crash out on main (my newsletter is my main lmao).

My Draw Steel character got nerfed to the ground

So the edited Draw Steel manuscript just released which has basically all the final text. In one of the campaigns I’m playing in, I play Kayzyxx the Unkneeling — a four-armed alien who is a psionic pugilist. And MCDM NERFED ME SO HARDDDD. Kay wasn’t even like… that good. She was by far the weakest of our party. Like… we have a dragon knight who can teleport 7 times a round and deal like 100 damager per round in the right scenarios. We have a tactician/troubadour combo that can grant like 6 attacks in one round. And we have poor Kayzyxx: always a moment away from death and always unable to use her abilities. She has a feature called a Null Field which is basically her signature ability and it’s NEVER COME UP.

Anyways, here is how she got nerfed. I’m not upset at all.

1. She has thundering hand wraps which throw people away from her after she punches them. Now they only push 1, which when many creatures reduce pushes by at least 1 means they don’t do anything.

2. In the previous version of the rules, Kay would have been able to throw creatures bigger than her around. Now she can’t :(. Size 3 creatures really do fuck her hard.

3. When Kay was bigger than another creature, she’d be more likely to throw them around. But NOT ANYMORE. This is especially relevant because she has an ability that makes her count as being bigger, so most nerds would be smaller than her.

4. Repeat 2-3 but instead of throw them around, it’s grab them.

5. She used to have an “ult” that would literally punch people out of existence for a moment — a powerful effect that meant the ability did very little damage. They changed the ability though so now it only has a chance to make the punchee easier to move around. BUT STILL WITH THE SHIT DAMAGE. Aaaaarrrrrggggghhhhhhh

All that, and she is still super fragile. The class pushes her to be up on the front lines, but she has the health of a mid-liner. It’s still incredibly easy to make it so she can’t get up to a target for punching action. AND CLASSES THAT WERE ALREADY BETTER GOT BUFFED. I’m so upset y’all.

My internet router made me waste 5 hours of my life

So I’m working on a little programming assignment for CPSC 317 (Computer Networking). Speaking of, I’m 96% sure that one of the TAs for that course is on this newsletter so… hello! (don’t look at my quiz 1 plz im embarrassed. its actually the lowest grade i’ve ever gotten on an assessment)

Anyways, the programming assignment is basically to ask a bunch of servers where a website is located. And when I ask the server, I’m saying “don’t go find out for me, I just want you to tell me the next person I’m supposed to ask.” But fun fact, if your internet router is trying to block ads/malicious websites for you it will COMPLETELY IGNORE ALL OF YOUR INSTRUCTIONS AND FUCK YOU. So it basically did everything for me. Which isn’t what I want because my internet router isn’t going to be uploaded to PrairieLearn with my submission. So I crashed out for like 5 hours trying to fix it. Because I thought it was a skill issue and that I was being dumb and I didn’t read the RFC correctly or that I didn’t have the right flags when I tried to dig in the terminal but NOOOOOOOOO. Apparently my router just HATES ME and doesn’t care if I’ve been crying for hours and am lying face down on the floor begging for the sweet release of death it will still WANT TO FUCK ME.

Anyways, I’m at a 90 on the assignment and that’s good enough for me. Fun insight into my coding process: I cmd+f-ed through my code for “fuck” before I made my final submission because half of my TODO comments are literally just “unfuck this future me”.

(Spoilers) Doctor Who finale is sooooo funnnnyyyyyyyyyyyy

Why make something new when you can recycle the people in the retirement home? (this is an exaggeration, she’s not that old. Nor is he. Well, at least a couple of the she’s are that old).

Also I’d like a finale that isn’t just Big CG Monster. Like we can do better than that, right? Like you’re wasting so much money making a big CG monster and then you can only use them for like two minutes what’s the point?

Also It’s a little bit giving D&D doing a whole bunch of fan service for… the 1980s D&D cartoon. Like… that’s not your audience anymore… We can do a little bit of fan service for four decade old characters every now and again. Like you get one every 5 years. But when everything is held together by prayers and decades-old characters… Why don’t we make some new iconic characters!!! HOW ABOUT THAT RTD????? MAYBE I DONT WANT ROSE AGAIN MAYBE I WANT SOMEONE NEW

The pacing of the finale is so curseeeedddd. So much happens just completely out of the blue with no foreshadowing (but then the show will actually unironically gaslight you about it). And one of the Doctor’s companions (she’s a woman :0) literally was put in a timeout box during the finale so she got to do literally nothing. And her entire personality became Mom for the finale. Like literally all of her other personality traits got erased and replaced by mom — even after the racist, homophobic, ableist, transphobic, misogynistic man’s dream of the world ended. Any personality? Yup it’s being a mom. It was unironically such a gaslighty episode.

And we just left Rogue in literal hell aaaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhh

RTD really cooked on this one, chat. Gatwa deserved way better.

I did some clean up

Not of anything important really. I just went back and added content tags for all the previous TWDNB posts, as well as adding guest authors where relevant.

In case you were wondering, here is the rough breakdown of the categories for the main story of each TWDNB (some issues got tagged with two of these, so they don’t add up to the total number of issues).

All in all, there have been 35 issues of the TWDNB (not counting this one you’re reading right now). 13 of them (37%) were published during the campaign period. 3 of them (9%) contained major contributions from a guest author.

I’ve Got Problems

Actually and truly just one of my 5 browser windows I had open whilst working on the first Point of Inquiry. Unironically I think all of these were on task — even the instagram tab.
